Interviewed by: Tony for MONARKH magazine on the 15/11/2008

1) How did you first get into design?

My journey in design started not long ago, in fact I only started getting interested in this field in late 2006 by designing web layouts and logotypes for contests and for small clients. After that it was a matter of time to start venturing into digital art since I got some experience in Photoshop.

2) How you would best describe your work?

Despite having a lot of styles on my portfolio and not sticking to a single style for too long I really liked the description that someone gave to my work, they described it as a retro futuristic style and I fully agree, my recent works follow a cocktail of vintage, electro and classic styles, all mixed into a single style. Been also developing a taste for black & white illustrations which can be easily noticed by looking at my recent pieces.

3) What inspires you the most?

Probably music, it really defines the mood and theme of most of my works, I usually work while listening to music so it became a big source of inspiration. I also get a lot of visual stimulation everyday by watching all kinds of art pieces, designs and illustrations in an almost day basis.

4) How do you normally start work on a project?

The most difficult part of a work is starting it, I usually start without nothing in mind, opening Photoshop or Illustrator and starting experimenting with random shapes and raw compositions, most of those experiments are scrapped after a few minutes but usually a single one turns out good and I keep developing and detailing it. It’s rare to have a work already planned in my head, I might have a concept or a mood, which is usual but the work itself only grows after I experiment a lot of styles and compositions.

5) On average, how many hours a week do you spend on design?

Really depends, since I’m also studying design in college I tend to have a lot more time spent on it but forgetting college works and focusing only on my personal and professional works, I would say probably around 15 to 20 hours in a normal week.

6) What style music do you listen to when you work?

Mostly electronic music, chill out, jazz and sometimes surf rock, stuff like LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip, Daft Punk, jazz artists like Miles Davis or John Coltrane and some less known surf bands like Man or Astro-Man, Fifty Foot Combo or The Ghastly Ones.

7) Who do you admire the most and why?

Stefan Sagmeister for his amazing view and influence in graphic design, he’s incredibly thoughtful and has unique concepts, it’s always great to read or listen to one of his interviews or conferences.

8) Favorite website(s)?

ffffound.com for the visual inspiration and Hypem.com for discovering new music, both are huge sources of inspiration.

9) Any words of wisdom you would like to share with us?

Have fun in what you do! Design is one of the few jobs that allows us to have lots of fun and craziness.
